Damien Newman, born in the UK, grew up in Silicon Valley in the 70s. And was immortalized by his father, William Newman in the 1975 Xerox Parc demonstration of a computer aided illustration program. As seen above.

Damien Newman is a researcher, designer, publisher, producer and lecturer working in the fields of complexity science, design, innovation, film and environmental and social impact.

Over the last three or so decades, Damien has founded, led or been part of some incredible design teams and companies, including Central, IDEO, Frog Design, Studio Archetype, New Media Factory and PUSH TV.

With over thirty five years of experience in design, Damien has worked across several disciplines of interaction design, product design, systems thinking, ethnographic research and visual design. Damien has led and contributed to projects ranging from designing a soft drink for Pepsi, an HQ for the largest South Korean Internet company, Brand Strategy for NHN, banks across Eastern Europe and the Future of Fish project with the Packard Foundation & Ashoka.

Damien previously taught the ME313 Human Values and Innovation in Design semester at Stanford University’s Graduate Design program, in the School of Engineering for five years. During which time, Damien designed student projects with NGOs and the Packard Foundation for practical experience.

Damien authored the Designer’s Guide to Brand Strategy, a 72 page illustrated PDF on the process of creating a brand which was downloaded 25,000 times in the first year. (A few years later I started charging for it…)

In 2003 Damien authored the Design Squiggle as an illustration of the process of innovation and design. Which over the past twenty years has been downloaded probably more times than the Designer’s Guide, and has been published in numerous books, used in presentations worldwide and is on the arms of at least two people that I know about. You can learn more about the Design Squiggle here.

Damien is a published author and speaker on the design and innovation process.

In 2019 Damien focused on the Filmmaking process and worked closely with the Director of the A24 film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Joe Talbot and his team. Later in 2020, Damien & Stacey Frost founded Darling&Co. to finance and develop new feature film projects. Damien has worked in distribution, development and just a wee bit in production. Darling&Co. currently has two feature films in development.
